Afternoon Snorkel Cruise on Calypso!!

Let’s start with FREE parking at the Ma’alaea Harbor shops where you’ll make your way down to the Calypso afternoon snorkel trip. It’s there that you’ll be greeted with much ALOHA by the friendliest crew on island and have the opportunity to take a souvenir ‘before’ photo with your group.

Once on board, it’s time to explore (Maui’s only boat offering) three levels of seating options. We’ve got shade, sun, inside, outside, upper deck, middle deck and lower to choose from so find the table and chairs that are just perfect for you. Settle in and you’ll instantly start to relax to the sound of island music that sets the vibe for this laid back afternoon trip.

Where you’ll end up really is determined by the direction of the afternoon winds and your expert captain. The size and design of Calypso allows for smooth sailing where other vessels may be rocking so crossing the 9 nautical miles to Molokini crater in the afternoon is a definite possibility. Once there it’s likely we will be the only boat onsite and anchor in the calm waters (that means excellent visibility for snorkeling) sheltered by the horseshoe shape of the island.

Again, depending on the wind this Calypso afternoon snorkel trip is a wild card with two possible outcomes, both of which can be considered ‘better’ depending on who you ask. Coral Gardens (west of the harbor, past the windmills where the cliffs meet the sea) takes less time to get to, which means more time in the water and enjoying the many activities on board. Brave the jump from the top deck into crystal blue waters, exhilarate yourself with a slide into the sea, see what you can see from the glass bottom windows, snorkel or try Snuba! Calypso crew are experts on it all and will provide all the tips, tricks and gear you need to ensure your best possible experience in the water.
On board photographers allow you to enjoy every minute of the trip and take home images above and below the surface. They even have underwater cameras that you can use to snap your own pics, if you so prefer. An on board Naturalist offers a free ‘reef tour’ at the snorkel site and is even willing to take your camera on a deep dive to capture that special fish you’ve spotted.

Sufficiently salty, it’s time for lunch and refreshments while you trade stories of the fish you’ve seen, who did the best high jump off the platform and tally up how many turtles were sighted on the reef that afternoon.

In summary, a few benefits of the afternoon trip:

  • No need to set an alarm, wake up on your own time and enjoy a relaxing morning
  • Less crowds! With less boats offering afternoon trips we often have entire reef systems to ourselves
  • It costs less! Save those precious funds for more mai tais and shave ice

Regardless of where you end up, I’ll promise you this. You wont find a friendlier crew, a more comfortable or entertaining boat on Maui. Oh, and guaranteed you’ll have the best sleep of your vacation after an afternoon of fun in the sun and sea.
