Snorkel Molokini and Turtle Town with Maui Snorkeling
Maui Snorkeling runs one of the island’s favorite Molokini snorkeling boats. A spacious motorized
catamaran, their swift Lani Kai is comfortable, stable, and carries just half the passenger load she is
designed for, which gives you plenty of room to explore the vessel and take in the sea sights! This 5
hour snorkeling tour to Molokini Crater out of Maalaea Harbor in the morning is a super fun must
do, and during whale season (December through April), you’re sure to get some whale watching in,
On the amazing ride out to the crater, the fabulous Maui Snorkeling crew will have a continental
breakfast laid out for you: bagels with cream cheese, jelly, and peanut butter; pastries, tropical fruit,
and coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. You can chat with the captain and crew about all things marine
and Maui, and they will outfit out you with all the snorkeling gear and instruction you’ll need once
you reach one of the most beautiful snorkel spots ever!
Molokini Crater is a bird preserve and a marine preserve, so happily prepare yourself to see beauty
both above and below the surface. Underwater visibility at Molokini is generally excellent, from 100
to 150 feet, and you can snorkel it or upgrade to a SNUBA adventure! SNUBA lets you go deeper
underwater for a longer period of time, as it connects you to an air tank sitting on the surface.
The varieties of fish living in the coral reef are incredible in shape, color, behavior, and size. You’re
likely to see the delicate teardrop butterflyfish, the wary looking needlefish, the color changing
trumpetfish, and the quick and lovely predator fish that is called jack (‘ulua in Hawaiian). Keep your
eyes open for the less commonly seen spotted eagle ray, several species of eel, and the regularly
camouflaged octopus (he’e). Maui Snorkeling provides optical masks and flotation devices if needed,
and the crew keeps an eye on you for safety while you’re in the water. Speaking of safety, wind and
sea conditions dictate which ocean areas are safe and clear to snorkel in, and the captain pays
attention to these. If necessary, she will choose another amazing underwater site for you.
Once you’ve completely enjoyed Molokini, you’ll be on your way to Turtle Town! Turtle Town is just
as its name suggests: an unforgettable snorkeling site chock full of Hawaiian sea turtles. These
graceful reptiles are an endangered species, and they breathe air at the surface, so please give them
their space while you watch them do their turtle thing. When you have had your fill of Turtle Town,
you’ll hop back onto the boat and devour a delicious deli-style lunch including pasta salad, a Maui
veggie tray, and chocolate chip cookies with macadamia nuts. Awesome! Water, juices, and sodas
are available all day, but beer and mai tais are only made available after snorkeling.
And after lunch, it’s time to return to the island proper. You’ll have had an absolutely magnificent
day on the Lani Kai snorkeling both Molokini and Turtle Town. Sounds incredible, doesn’t it?
