Your adventure begins with the drive to the ranch! Located north of Wailuku town on the Kahekili Highway, the working ranch is certainly off of the beaten path for many of Hawaii’s visitors. As you slowly wind your way around the narrow road, Waihee Ridge comes into view on your left side and Mendes Ranch is the valley to the right.
Upon check in to the Mendes Corral, you are welcomed like family by friendly guides and ranch hands. They thoroughly explain everything you need to know and assist with basic riding instructions. Once your small group is saddled up, you are ready to begin your Maui horseback riding journey. The easy path meanders from the lush valley towards the coast while your guides share with you the history of the ranch and Mendes family. They are also well versed on the indigenous species of plants in the area. As you approach the rugged, rocky coastline you’ll be in awe of the spectacular sweeping views from the cliffs. Stop to take advantage of the phenomenal photo opportunity from the vista. At this point you are probably beginning to feel a bit more comfortable with your trusty steed and have gotten to know their habits. If you have the desire and are capable, there are even a few spots along the trail where you can trot or canter for even more excitement. Return to the corral with an appetite and join the guides and other guests for a taste of Hawaiian Paniolo (Cowboy) lifestyle with a barbeque lunch. Guests just arriving for the afternoon ride will have the opportunity to join in as well. Including beef ribs, bbq chicken, green and pasta salad as well as beans, rolls and refreshments. When making your reservation, be sure to include your riding ability as well as your height and weight so the ranch can match you with a horse.
